BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SOUTH PUGET SOUND AND COMCAST ADVANCE DIGITAL EQUITY ON NATIONAL STEM/STEAM DAY

Comcast Washington

In celebration of National STEM/STEAM Day (Nov. 8), the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound and Comcast Washington are announcing a new partnership aimed at encouraging kids in Pierce County to explore and pursue their interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (S.T.E.A.M.). Comcast is donating $15,000, 40 laptops, and free internet service to five Boys and Girls Clubs in the South Puget Sound as part of Project UP, the company’s $1 billion commitment to reach 50 million people over the next 10 years with the tools, resources, and skills needed to succeed in a digital world. Digital access and adoption are critical in keeping people connected to the world around them, and for many students, it is one of the most important keys to success. The funds, computer equipment, and robust WiFi coverage will support the Al Davies, Bremerton, Lakewood, Milgard Family Eastside, and Henry T. Schatz branches of the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound. These chapters, located in Tacoma, Bremerton, and Lakewood are offering programs that help hundreds of kids get online, participate in distance learning, improve their science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics skills, and achieve academic success. Using a cross-disciplinary approach that channels young people’s natural curiosity into the design process inherent in the arts, BGCSPS’s STEM programs empower youth to create new solutions to real-world challenges. This project-based approach develops critical thinking, problem-solving, and other 21st-century skills critical to success in the STEM workforce and beyond. “When private companies and organizations like ours can come together it can truly create something special for our community. These funds, access to internet and technology donations will have a tremendous impact on our local Clubs, the members we serve, and their families” said Carrie Holden, President/CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound. “We are grateful to Comcast for its contributions and a common goal to promote digital equity as well as Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math for our kids.” As a part of Internet Essentials, Comcast’s signature digital equity initiative, the company has recently instituted “Lift Zones” at community and educational centers across the country, including nearly 100 locations expected to open here in Washington by year-end. These locations, which include the five participating branches of the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound, offer free internet access and educational tools at safe, supportive learning spaces for students to get connected online, participate in distance learning, and do their homework. “Bridging the digital divide and raising awareness of digital adoption have been critical priorities for Comcast since 2011, and these are important now more than ever,” said Carla Carrell, External Affairs Director for Comcast in Washington. “Working side by side with our public, private and nonprofit partners is key to leveling the digital playing field in Tacoma and Pierce County.” About Project UP & Comcast’s $1 Billion Commitment to Advancing Digital Equity For over a decade, connecting more people to the Internet and the technology they need to participate and excel in an increasingly digital world has been a core focus for the company. Looking toward the next ten years, Comcast is building on that foundation and expanding its impact through Project UP, a comprehensive initiative to advance digital equity and help build a future of unlimited possibilities. Backed by a $1 billion commitment to reach 50 million people, Project UP encompasses the programs and community partnerships across Comcast, NBCUniversal, and Sky that connect people to the Internet, advance economic mobility, and open doors for the next generation of innovators, entrepreneurs, storytellers, and creators. Quidel Corporation to Sponsor Distinguished Speaker Series Conducted by the Bay Area Lyme Foundation

Quidel Corporation

Quidel Corporation announced today that it will serve as sponsor for the upcoming Distinguished Speaker Series being conducted by the Bay Area Lyme Foundation. Quidel is a California-based diagnostic health care manufacturer known for successfully developing rapid diagnostic health solutions, including the industry-leading Sofia ® 2 Lyme FIA test for Lyme disease. The Distinguished Speaker Series are free community events that provide new information on various Lyme-related topics. Speakers typically feature an esteemed scientific researcher paired with a Lyme survivor sharing their inspirational story in an open-discussion format. The events are designed to create a more informed, connected and inspired public, which, in turn, will lead to stronger families, schools, businesses and communities. “We share the Bay Area Lyme Foundation’s mission to make Lyme disease easy to diagnose and simple to cure,” said Judi Tilghman, Ph.D., vice president of technology assessment at Quidel. “Over the years the Foundation has collaborated with world-class scientists and institutions to accelerate medical breakthroughs for Lyme disease and to build a more informed and engaged public. We are honored to sponsor this important speakers series in support of those efforts.” On Nov. 3, the series will feature a researcher, physician and Lyme patient advocate who will discuss how the immune system “can protect or attack” when it comes to Lyme disease. The discussion will focus on the importance of using a broad and comprehensive diagnostic and treatment approach to Lyme disease. Speakers include Liz Horn, Ph.D., MBI, principal investigator, Lyme Disease Biobank, and principal, LHC Biosolutions; Victoria Blaho, Ph.D., assistant professor, Sanford Burnham Prebys, Immunity and Pathogenesis Program; and David N. Haney, Ph.D., researcher and family caregiver. The Nov. 3 event will be held from 4-7 p.m. in the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in San Diego. Reservations are required and can be made at SpeakerSeries@bayarealyme.org or by calling 650-530-2684. Full vaccination is required for this venue. Lyme disease is on the rise to record numbers throughout the country and has the potential to affect as many as 476,000 citizens before the year is out. Leading the way in Lyme disease testing is the innovative Sofia ® 2 Lyme FIA by Quidel. This revolutionary test provides the patient and physician with indicative results within 15 minutes, as opposed to days, which has historically been the norm (and during which time organisms can spread and become systemic). It can be performed in the privacy of a doctor’s office, local clinic or even by a nurse at a children’s summer camp; and it is the only test that can get results from a simple finger prick of blood. About Quidel Corporation Quidel Corporation (Nasdaq: QDEL) is a leading manufacturer of diagnostic solutions at the point of care, delivering a continuum of rapid testing technologies that further improve the quality of health care throughout the globe. An innovator for over 40 years in the medical device industry, Quidel pioneered the first FDA-cleared point-of-care test for influenza in 1999 and was the first to market a rapid SARS-CoV-2 antigen test in the U.S. Under trusted brand names, Sofia®, Solana®, Lyra®, Triage® and QuickVue®, Quidel’s comprehensive product portfolio includes tests for a wide range of infectious diseases, cardiac and autoimmune biomarkers, as well as a host of products to detect COVID-19. College of DuPage’s Human Services Program Adopts Open Educational Resources to Lower Textbook Costs for Students

College of DuPage

Eager to expand access to educational opportunities, the Human Services program at College of DuPage is taking advantage of the College’s Open Educational Resources (OER) program. To date, more than half of all Human Services classes at COD utilize OER to make attending college more affordable for students. “Our goal is to reduce costs for students and to ensure that everyone has access to materials from the first day of a course,” Human Services Program Chair Jason Florin said. COD has embraced the Open Access Scholarship movement in higher education, and the OER program prioritizes low-cost and no-cost, day-one access to course materials for all students, particularly those who are taking general education courses. The creation of the OER program stems from a desire to close the opportunity gap and to provide equitable education for all, said President Dr. Brian Caputo. “When high-quality, no-cost resources are accessible to everyone-independent of one’s socioeconomic status, it brings all students that much closer to reaching similar standards of education,” said Dr. Caputo. With a goal of creating more opportunities for students, Florin is collaborating with National Louis University to develop a bachelor’s degree transfer pathway that utilizes OER. “If we are able to significantly minimize or eliminate textbook costs in this program, I believe we will be offering one of the most affordable four-year degrees anywhere in the country, equal to the cost for one year of tuition at most Illinois public institutions, and a single semester at private universities,” he said. “And importantly, we are not sacrificing any quality by doing this. In fact, most of the time the quality of the curriculum actually improves when faculty adopt an OER because they are intimately involved in finding relevant materials, updating assignments and ensuring that the course objectives are fulfilled. I've found that in the courses where I've adopted OER, the students are more engaged than before.” The new pathway would complement the existing 3+1 Bachelor of Arts in Human Services partnership with National Louis University. Through the partnership, students take their first three years of study through COD, while the fourth year is taught by NLU faculty on COD’s campus at a reduced four-year tuition rate of around $26,000. COD Reference Librarian Denise Coté said access to OER is just one example of how COD is bridging the equity gap for students in regard to access to technology and resources—a gap made ever wider by the COVID-19 pandemic. “COD faculty and staff are always thinking innovatively to help students succeed from day one,” she said. “I continue to be motivated by my fellow faculty who work tirelessly to help students be successful and are dedicated to the constant improvement of teaching and learning at the College.” With COD’s OER program proving successful, Coté said the long-term goal is to develop OER materials to fully support all of COD’s degree programs with the goal of improving educational outcomes, an initiative called the zero-textbook-costs program. “We are making great progress expanding OER to other academic areas across the College,” she said. “Feedback from students about these materials is not only that they're grateful for the price barrier to have been removed but also that they feel the course materials have been designed specifically for them.” Learn more about OER opportunities at COD. Higher education leaders discuss building resilient universities in Asia at QS APPLE Conference

Hong Kong Baptist University

HONG KONG SAR - Media OutReach - 2 November 2021 - Distinguished higher education leaders in the Asia-Pacific acknowledged at the Quacquarelli Symonds Asia-Pacific Professional Leaders in Education (QS APPLE) 2021 Conference that the strategic direction of transdisciplinary education and research is fundamental to the development of higher education in the region, and that universities need to become more resilient to cope with technological advancements and uncertainties in the post-pandemic era. The Presidents Panel of the QS APPLE 2021 Conference featured higher education leaders in the region including (clockwise from top left) Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU; Professor Lily Kong, President of the Singapore Management University; Professor Joonki Paik, Provost and Executive Vice President of Research of the Chung-Ang University in Korea; Professor Yang Bin, Vice President and Provost of Tsinghua University in mainland China; and Professor T.G. Sitharam, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati as panelists; and Mr Anton John Crace, Editor & Programme Designer of QS, as the moderator. The sector leaders, who joined the Presidents Panel with the theme “ Building resilient universities for tomorrow: An Asian perspective ” yesterday (1 November) at the QS APPLE 2021 Conference, also agreed that artificial intelligence (AI) will empower both educators and students to cope with future education and workforce trends. The QS APPLE 2021 Conference, hosted by Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and co-hosted by Prince of Songkla University in Thailand, is being held virtually from 1 to 3 November with the theme “Future Rebalance: Emerging trends and workforce in the Asia Pacific”. The conference features more than 80 distinguished speakers from world-leading universities and organisations, and the programme includes keynote speeches, debates, panel discussions and case studies that reflect the opportunities and trends in education in the Asia-Pacific region. In his opening remarks at the conference, Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, pointed out that higher education is in the midst of an exciting transformation brought about not only by the pandemic, but also the incredible advances happening in AI and the technology sector. He said that in this fast-evolving world, we need to race against time: “Education is the key to adapting to new technologies, and universities will play a key role in closing an imminent skills gap by enabling their students to acquire transferable competencies alongside technological skills. “Universities must sow the seeds of systemic change to nurture cultures that emphasise care, collaboration and community engagement if we are to reap the harvest of transdisciplinary research – a rich yield where scientific rigour, societal impact and wider engagement collide,” he said. Ben Sowter, Senior Vice President of QS Intelligence Unit, said: “As a consequence of recent challenges faced, and largely adapted to, by universities, the cat is truly out of the bag – universities can change and they can do it fast. On what other challenges should they next focus their collective might? The primary purpose of this conference is not merely to sustain the conversation, but to evoke action. Beyond action universities might take to reinforce their own resilience as institutions, to what they can do to augment ours as a species.” The Conference’s Presidents Panel featured higher education leaders in the region, including Professor Alexander Wai of HKBU; Professor Lily Kong, President of the Singapore Management University; Professor Joonki Paik, Provost and Executive Vice-President of Research of the Chung-Ang University in Korea; Professor Yang Bin, Vice-President and Provost of Tsinghua University in mainland China; and Professor T.G. Sitharam, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, as panellists. The panellists shared their visions and experience on how we can build resilient universities in the Asia-Pacific region that can help students flourish in the face of an uncertain future that has been brought about by recent rapid technological advancements and the COVID-19 pandemic. The importance of both natural and social sciences, as seen in transdisciplinary research in terms of addressing grand global challenges, was also ascertained. “At HKBU, we foster transdisciplinary research with a focus on three areas. The first one is wellness, and it includes health, food, drug discovery and Chinese medicine. Another area is art-tech, which embraces visualisation technologies for traditional art history and culture. All these areas are powered by technologies including AI and big data, which is our third area of focus. We strongly believe that these are the areas which will build students’ resilience and prepare them for an unknown future,” said Professor Wai. The Panel discussion also touched on their experience of integrating AI into education programmes, strengthening the AI capabilities of students for the future world of work, and ways to boost internal administrative efficiencies. Please visit the official website of the conference ( https://qsapple.org/ ) for the full agenda and other information about the event. Greenland’s Prime Minister to Keynote ZESTAs COP26 Burns Supper

Morgan Marketing & Communications

Prime Minister of Greenland, Múte Bourup Egede, will be delivering the keynote address at ZESTAs COP26 Burns Supper on Monday, November 1 st hosted by SHIFT clean energy. The supper will conclude the first day of Ship ZERO hosted by ZESTAs (Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association) in Glasgow as part of the COP26 activities. It is expected that the Prime Minister will be announcing a major Greenland government initiative relating to fossil fuel use. "With the Arctic warming at a rate three times faster than the rest of the world, we are in Greenland experiencing the drastic changes first-hand “stated the Prime Minister. “The science is alarming and our collective actions must be accelerated. That is why the Government of Greenland has announced an immediate halt to all new oil and gas explorations and are putting all efforts into developing our green energy sources. We believe that Greenland can become an important partner for zero-emission shipping. We have huge untapped hydropower resources that exceed our domestic demand multiple times, which can generate cheap renewable electricity for e-fuels, and we have an infrastructure well suited for being early adapters." “Ship ZERO 0 – Charging to True Zero” is a three-day workshop including robust technical presentations from zero-emissions solutions providers, as well as finance, insurance, classification sectors and regulators. Speakers’ panels, audience Q&A, and brainstorming sessions will follow each session to facilitate collaborative solution building, as well as giving stakeholders an opportunity to examine how solutions will fit with their individual business cases. The event takes place well before COP26 transport day, which will give the team of researchers and stakeholders time to summarize the outcomes to be taken in consideration by regulators beforehand. “We are honored that Prime Minister Egede will be making such a pivotal keynote address as part of our event”, stated Madadh MacLaine, Secretary-General of ZESTAs. “His leadership will resonate around the globe as we address a zero emission future.” Highlights of the ShipZERO conference include a keynote by Peter Thomson, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Fiji to the United Nations as well as the UNSG’s Special Envoy for the Ocean on A healthy planet requires a healthy ocean, a healthy ocean requires clean shipping; Why Zero Emissions Needs Better Battery Safety Standards, delivered by Brent Perry, ZESTAs Board Chair and CEO of SHIFT; and How Financiers, Insurers and Cargo owners can enable innovation and accelerate the transition to true zero emissions from Michael Parker, Chairman of Global Shipping, Citibank and Chairman of the Poseidon Principles Association. Registration is still open, and media are welcome. Go to https://zestas.org/ship-zero/ The Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association promotes the rapid and large-scale uptake of Zero Emissions Ship Technology (ZEST). Zero emissions means zero GHG emissions at the point of use on the vessel with minimal upstream impacts. By combining zero emission technologies, it is possible to achieve zero emissions at the shipboard level faster. With today’s technologies, the shipping industry can achieve fully zero emissions now, particularly on smaller return to base vessels, as well as drastically reduce emissions on larger, ocean-going vessels with more complicated operational profiles. Velocity Global is a presenting sponsor of the upcoming event that Cassidy has played for the last seven years. Stream music from DJ Matt Cassidy here.
